Seeking some one to mentor for Coml 111
Manaaki Pihipihinga is a mentoring programme for Maori and Pacific
students doing BA & BCA degrees, and is run by VUW's Student Services
Mentoring sessions are for an hour weekly or fortnightly and are
discussion times. The mentor helps students with any questions they
have from lectures and general questions about the course, and makes
sure they are on the right track with assignments. Mentees have to be
Maori or Pacific but Mentors need not be.
I am writing to ask if you would be a Mentor for Trimester 2
You have clearly demonstrated your academic capabilities to be that of
a role model and most of you have been singled out individually by
lecturers as being a recognisable academic role model for our students
who may be struggling with a course that you have already passed!
The position will require you to meet up informally each week or on a
needs-based basis and 'kôrero' 'discussion'. You are not expected to be
a tutor, nor are you thought of as a 'buddy'. You will be a mentor,
sharing academic advice with your mentees and talking about lecture
content etc. The position is also voluntary, but that doesn't mean you
won't get anything to take away with you at the end.
There are benefits - a koha, written and verbal references, a
certificate and the chance to be recognised as a likely candidate for
tutoring. Did I mention it looks GREAT on your CV?
Give me a call, email, text, or a visit if you would like to be a
Mentor this year, or if you need more info. I, along with the Mentees
appreciate your tautoko! Support!

status: flattered.. but I'm doing 4 papers this semester.. probably too much for me to handle right now.. Would definitely take it if I was asked to be a tutor..
